The Karapoti Classic is a demanding 50km mountain bike race held in the spectacular Karapoti Park, and offers the biggest prize purse of any mountain bike event in the country.
The race begins with competitors carrying their bikes in a sprint across the Akatarawa River, followed by a 10km warm-up in the Karapoti Gorge. The toughest challenge kicks in with a mainly uphill route through Deadwood, boulder-filled Rock Garden and boggy Devil's Staircase, where "Titi" marks the highest point of the journey at 613 metres.
Founded in 1986 by Paul Kennett, the Karapoti Classic was New Zealand's first mountain bike race. It has taken place ever since and is the country's longest-running mountain bike event, with 1000 riders competing annually. There is also a 20km Karapoti Challenge for those who want a slightly easier ride.
