Mindil Beach is invaded by unusual vessels, constructed entirely out of beer cans, during the Darwin Lions Regatta. People flock to the beach to watch the crazy goings on, which also feature unruly concerts, dances and bizarre beach competitions.
There's thong (flip-flop) throwing tournaments, a big tug-of-war and the infamous Henley-on-Mindil, a bizarre foot-powered, bottomless boat event in which crews lift up the boats and run with them, Flintstones-style.
Some of the boats entered in the regatta itself are lovingly constructed, while others appear to be somewhat less than seaworthy. It's certainly fair to say that there is some interesting design technology. A testament perhaps to the fact that all the beer cans used in construction must be empty.
While it's certainly true that large amounts of Darwin Stubbies are consumed during the event, (at 2.25 litres or 75 ounces, Darwin Stubbies are the world's largest bottles of beer) the organisers have in recent years attempted to transform this into more of a family occasion.
While the dates have been confirmed for 2009, the event is dependent upon the tide, so please check with the organisers before travelling.
