Set in picturesque hillside surroundings, the Kiyomizudera temple is a Kyoto landmark. Kiyomizudera means "Temple of Pure Water", and the temple attracts many young people who visit the on-site Shinto shrine to pray for success in finding a soul mate.
The Kiyomizudera temple was built in 798 and is part of the Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main hall is situated on a large wooden terrace, from which there are good views of the temple grounds, the pagoda and the city beyond.
