Ueno Park opened in 1873. Set in Tokyo's Ueno district, the park is dotted with museums, temples and the zoo. Visitors head for the Tokyo National Museum and statue of Meiji samurai Takamori Saigo. The springtime cherry blossom is exquisite.
The statue of Takamori Saigo, erected in 1898, is one of Japan's best known monuments. The Kiyomizu Kannon-do Temple, built in 1631, is dedicated to Kannon, the Shinto fertility goddess.

Other attractions amid the cherry trees include the National Science Museum, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Museum of Western Art, housed in a Le Corbusier building.
