Celebrated in several towns throughout Malta and its sister island Gozo, the Feast of the Assumption is the height of the summer season of religious festivals and also a public holiday, commemorating the patron saint Santa Maria.
In addition to church services, the celebrations are highlighted by outdoor festivities, mainly in the form of band marches and fireworks displays.
The festa starts on a Wednesday and culminates on the Sunday evening. The Parish Churches are embellished with damask and silverware and the climax of each celebration is the pontifical High Mass celebrated in the mornings (approx 9.15am) and evenings (7pm) on the Sunday. A religious procession follows with the life-size statue of the patron saint carried shoulder-high through the illuminated and decorated streets of the village.
