The Gourd Festival is held in Nice's Cimiez gardens and celebrates the Annunciation of Mary at the beginning of spring. The event traditionally symbolises the end of winter and gives pride of place to the gourd (Cougourdon in French).
It's amazing to see how many uses can be found for this vegetable, given a little imagination. Rich dishes are served and locals exhibit their engraved and painted gourds.

A mass is held to commemorate Annunciation and a traditional Provençal band provides music to accompany the displays.
