Oria re-enacts the tournament of the districts ordered by Frederick II when he passed through the city in 1225. The District Tournament is preceded by a historical procession where more than 400 actors in costume recreate the medieval atmosphere.
For the last 35 years, the city has recreated this historic episode with a lavish ceremony, and by decorating downtown with banners and cloths. The Four Districts (Castello, Giudea, Lama and San Basilio) compete in a series of different tests and events that range from a horse battle to pulling weights.
The origins of the District Tournament and the historical procession in Oria date back to 1225. That year, Frederick the Second, who was about to meet his future spouse Jolanda di Brienne, was staying with his court in Oria. The Emperor, to while away his anxiety and delight his courtesans, decided to order a tournament, a frequent and much-loved spectacle in Medieval and Renaissance times.
