Benmore is a magnificent woodland garden set in the mountains of the Cowal Peninsula. Over 140 acres are planted with unusual shrubs and rare trees making it a place of rare serenity and great beauty.
The arrival to the garden is spectacular indeed: an avenue of giant redwood trees which gives way to waymarked trails, a beautifully serene pond and a formal garden with a display of Himalayan and Oriental plants. Owned by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, it has richly planted hill slopes ending in a 450-foot summit with dramatic views over the Eachaig valley and the Holy Loch.
Benmore is particularly striking in autumn, when the azaleas are at their best. There are guided tours of the gardens at 2pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.
