La Félibrée draws 25,000 visitors each year for a journey into the Dordogne's romantic past and the Occitan language (langue d'Oc). It takes place in a different town every year - the 2005 edition is to be held in Port Sainte Foy and Sainte Foy la Grande.
The event begins with an outdoor morning mass in Occitan, followed by a sumptuous, open-air banquet (known as the Taulade) and afternoon Cour d'Amour - a Court of Love - dedicated to the music, dance, theatre and poetry of the troubadours. The troubadours helped to bring about the literary renaissance of the 11th-14th centuries with their passionate poetry of ladies adored from afar.
Throughout the day, participants can also discover traditional trades from the region where the langue d'Oc is spoken, such as basket-making and clog-making.
The langue d'Oc, or Occitan, is a Latin language spoken since 1000AD in most French departments south of the Loire. It is also spoken in 13 Alpine valleys in Italy and the Val d'Aran in Spain.
