The A$3 million Cox Plate, run over a mile and a quarter (2040m) at Melbourne's Moonee Valley racecourse, is one of the Spring Racing Carnival's major races. The prize money is Australia's second largest after the Melbourne Cup.
The natural amphitheatre of the Valley, combined with the huge attendance and general excitement of the big race, gives the Cox Plate an atmosphere to match any race in the world. Named after the founder of Moonee Valley, William Samuel Cox, the Tattersall's Cox Plate was first run in 1922 and remains one of the highlights in the Australian horse-racing calendar.
