The Cairo International Film Festival has been going strong since its inception in 1976. Along with regular competitions, tributes and controversial films, it features seminars addressing contemporary world issues. Each year the focus falls on individual countries and their film-making industries.
With a long cinematic tradition dating back to the early 1930s, Egypt has a remarkable influence on the Arab world and Cairo is known as the "Hollywood of the Middle East".
