The 6303-metre (6893-yard) par 71 course is set just inland from the Atlantic and offers a mixture of pine forest, dunes and open, links-like terrain. From points all over the course there are beautiful views of the ocean and the Sintra Hills in the distance, while the (extremely unforgiving) rough is scattered with thousands of tiny flowering shrubs, planted as part of the conservation project.

A round here is a stern test of golfing ability, particularly if the wind is blowing. Many drives require a long carry to reach a safe position, and although the fairways offer a decent landing area to aim for, anything that hits the rough is likely to find trouble. If you're used to playing in the UK, then putting here will be a whole new experience - the large, undulating greens are lightning fast and tough to read.

An army of greenkeepers and a battery of high-tech equipment mean that the course is never in less than perfect condition. Sunken probes at different points ensure that the level of watering is monitored constantly, while a nursery and wildlife sanctuary preserves and enhances the natural environment. The club has only 43 members and despite its recent opening, the course is already bedded down and immaculate.

Finally, there are copious off-course practice facilities and a minimalist glass and steel clubhouse which offers state-of-the-art facilities, food and drink and a comfortable shaded balcony with views of the nearby ocean.
