La Unión in Murcia presents one of the most important flamenco festivals in Spain, the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas. The town hosts ten days of impassioned performances, competitions and lively parties.
The festival started out in 1961 as a flamenco cante (singing) competition - the cante por mineras - which awarded the prize of the Lámpara Minera. In 1980 the toque (guitar) competition was added and then in 1993 baile (dance), with more than €30,000 in prize money up for grabs.
As well as the heat of the competitions, the whole town gets taken over by flamenco, with performances by the leading flamenco stars, followed by parties and open-mike sessions where anyone can join in with the juerga (party) until the early hours of the morning. The famous madrugadas flamencas (flamenco sunrises), exhibitions, book and video presentations, flamenco poetry and films complete the programme.
