Germany's answer to the Tour de France, this professional cycling race tests riders with a 1400km-long journey from Kitzbühel to Bremen. The Deutschland Tour is made up of 13 stages, held in such picturesque spots as Mainz, Munich and Neuss.
The race begins at Lake Schwarzsee and heads for 4km through the old town of the popular ski and holiday resort of Kitzbühel. The yellow jersey is decided nine days later with a 35km-long time trial stage.
The Deutschland Tour marks the latest attempt to establish stage racing in Germany on a permanent basis, after a number of attempts met with financial setbacks. While the world's top riders have not figured in the race, it nonetheless brings out an elite corps of professional competitors. Around 20 eight-man teams are expected to compete in the category 2.3 ride. Amateur cyclists are also invited to attempt the entire route, with an impressive turnout so far.
