Like culture but not queuing? Visit Bordeaux for the Nuit des Musées. For one night, French museums open until 1am, offering a chance to see the Musée des Beaux-Arts, and hundreds more, for free - no tour bus in sight.
The Nuit des Musées is an initiative launched by the French Department of Culture in 2005. It opens up some 1000 museums throughout France and Europe to the public, to a background of debates, competitions, conferences and exhibitions, from dusk until 1am, all for no charge. Similar events take place throughout Europe on the same date.
Participating museums are announced in the run-up to the day, but it is almost certain that there will be a free museum in your vicinity. Please visit the Nuit des Musées website to find out what's on during your visit.
