The Cavallo Parato is a religious and historical celebration in Brindisi with roots in the Middle Ages. On the day of the Corpus Domini the bishop leads a solemn procession through town and to the beach on a white stallion.
Carrying his tabernacle and escorted by an entourage of knights, the bishop dismounts and blesses the sea when he reaches the shore. The procession then winds back to the centre of the city, where the celebrations continue with light shows and fireworks. The rite is said to have been performed annually since 1264, when the Eucarestia was involved as ransom in a hostage drama involving Louis IX of France.
