In an age-old Christmas Eve tradition, the children of Boulogne-sur-Mer parade through the streets with lanterns made from beet. The children sing Guènels Night songs and knock on doors for a festive equivalent of trick or treat.
The origins of the Guènel tradition are somewhat obscure, but it is has been an annual event for centuries. Guènels are traditionally made by children, but there is nothing to stop you joining in. All you need are a large beet, a sharp knife, some paints and a candle. If the carving sounds too much like hard work, simply admire the flickering lights fill the streets on Christmas Eve.
