The tiny village of Filzmoos, south of Salzburg, is the ultimate location for high-profile ballooning. Every January teams from all over the globe make the pilgrimage to the Salzburger Sportwelt Amadé ski resort for the International Hot Air Balloon Week.
Two main factors account for Filzmoos' status as a pilgrimage site for balloonists - the challenging winds off the surrounding mountains and the fact that enthusiasts can take off from the middle of the village.
The event draws thousands of people and it's not hard to see why. The highlight is the Night of Balloons on the second evening, where a flurry of balloons ignite their burners to illuminate the night sky.
For more information please contact the Filzmoos Tourist Office.
