Surrounded by fantastic Caribbean coral reefs that famously dazzled Jacques Cousteau, Cozumel is Mexico's largest island. Go snorkelling to see tropical fish and pristine coral reef and dive down to explore the roomy Dos Ojos and Bat underwater caverns.
Until 1961, Cozumel was inhabited by fishermen and its Mayan remains were known only to the locals. The Mayan ruins of the San Gervacio Restoration Project contain a site sacred to the Mayan goddess of fertility (or medicine, depending on who you ask), Ixchel. Local women would come to ask her for children or cures. Besides this site, there are over 30 other archaeological sites including Castillo Real on the north-eastern coast, El Cedral and El Caracol.
