In honour of the man who co-founded Les Arcs, locals and holidaymakers join forces for a large friendly ski race. The Robert Blanc Derby starts at 2600m, from the top of the Transarc gondola lift, and finishes in Hauteville Gondon.
Robert Blanc co-founded Les Arcs in 1968, bringing together a variety of small pre-existing villages and new sites chosen for their optimal location and atmosphere. Among other achievements, he also invented the learning method known as ski évolutif, by which beginner skiers start off with relatively short skis, progressing to longer gear as their ability develops.
Over 500 well-wishers come to pay their tributes to Robert every year by participating in the Derby and the subsequent ceremony. The event culminates in a mountain buffet with music. The area is known for its fine sausages (diots), small pasta-like shapes known as crozets and the famous tartiflette, a calorie-laden combo of onions, bacon, potato, cream and reblochon cheese - ideal after a day's exertion in the cold.
