In Kowloon, the red-and-gold Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple demonstrates spiritual Hong Kong, albeit crowded. A noisy gathering of incense smoke, prayers and offerings, hoards of locals come to learn their future by shaking the fortune sticks.
An excellent example of a traditional Chinese temple, the sacred grounds are busiest during Chinese New Year and on Wong Tai Sin's birthday (the 23rd day of the eighth lunar month).

Unique details of the temple include red pillars, a golden roof adorned with blue friezes, yellow latticework and multicoloured carvings. A traditionally carved granite archway separates the two terraces, while the main hall is surrounded by doors and windows. Although primarily a Taoist temple, some areas of the grounds are dedicated to Buddhism and Confucianism.
