A huge literature, music and visual arts event, Holland's Crossing Border Festival presents an inspired mix of writers, musicians and performers. More than 80 acts appear at the Royal Theatre, across a variety of stages.
First staged as a low-key festival on the beach near The Hague in 1991, the Crossing Border Festival is now one of the best literature events in the world. It's certainly the hippest - as well as straight readings, screenings and gigs, the festival looks for "unique and once-only" combinations of talent - themed readings accompanied by musicians, for example. It also puts a big emphasis on interaction between the performers and the public.
The Crossing Border Festival regularly attracts some of the leading leftfield and mainstream talent on the international scene. In the past few years, it has featured contributions from such literary luminaries as Kinky Friedman, Fay Weldon and Michel Houellebecq, along with counterculture demi-gods like Robert Crumb, Allen Ginsberg and Jello Biafra.
