The Australian Museum in central Sydney is one of the world's great natural history museums. Its collection encompasses millions of years of history, from palaeontology and earth sciences to anthropology and the study of indigenous Australians.
Established in 1827, this was Australia's first museum, and has amassed unique and extensive collections of natural science and cultural artefacts over two centuries. The scope of the exhibits is enormous - from the smallest invertebrate to the massive hanging Sperm Whale skeleton.
As well as being a treasure trove of knowledge for serious-minded adults, Sydney's Australian Museum also offers loads of fun for children. Kidspace, on level two, is a learning area aimed at the under 5s. Each of the five "pods" offers interactive displays, wall puzzles and much more, all based on a different theme: marine, bugs, volcano, observation and imagination.
