As part of the countrywide New Zealand Film Festival, Christchurch has, since 1977, cherry-picked from the main programme as seen in Auckland and Wellington earlier in the winter. Catch the screenings at various cinemas in the city.
With New Zealand thrown in the cinematic spotlight after its own starring role as the spectacular backdrop to Peter Jackson's cinematic trilogy The Lord of the Rings, the event generates ever-greater interest.
A non-profit, culturally-motivated event, the festival's main aim is to make the best international cinema of the last 12 months available to as large an audience as possible in New Zealand. All the events draw on the same stock of around 120 features and even more shorts. The line-up takes in the highlights of a wide range of international festivals and does a very good job of balancing the film buff's wish list with the needs of more mainstream audiences.
The full programme is available from July, when it is published on the festival website.
