The world-renowned Comrades Marathon meanders through the rolling valley of a thousand hills in KwaZulu-Natal. The 89km route alternates annually between a downhill from inland Pietermaritzburg to coastal Durban and an uphill race in the opposite direction.
In 2009, the downhill race starts at Pietermaritzburg City Hall and finishes at the Sahara Kingsmead Cricket Stadium in Durban. The closing date for entries is 31 March. Please visit the event website for further information and an online application form.
Each year 20,000 athletes start running at 5.30am and finish the race 12 hours later. The scenery is breathtaking and the support from crowds along the road is excellent. True to its name the comradeship on the road is inspiring, and exhausted runners have been known to carry cramping and immobile comrades up the last hills and over the finish line.
