The annual Algarve International Film Festival, (FICA - Festival Internacional de Cine do Algarve), in the town of Portimão, is Portugal's oldest cinema event, dating back to 1972. It centres on a short film competition, open to animated and live-action 35mm shorts.
In addition to the main award, the juries give out some special prizes (Best Film By A Portuguese Director, Best Film About Nature And The Environment, Best Film About The Algarve and - best of all - Best Film With A Message Of Love And Peace Among Men). Films are screened in their original languages with electronic subtitles.
The festival also puts on a number of regional screenings and presentations, the details of which vary every year. Usually, the following Algarve towns participate: Lagos, Portimão, Alvor, Monchique, Lagoa, Mexilhoeira da Carregação, Mexilhoeira Grande, Silves, Messines, Albufeira, Guia, Loulé, Faro, Olhão and Tavira, along with Sabóia, Milfontes and Ourique in the Alentejo.
The shorts section is divided into five different parts: a retrospective, FICA 30, screening the winners of the main shorts prize over the years; a national shorts section; a section that pays homage to Annecy, where one of the most important animation festivals in the world takes place; New Territories, looking at new trends in shorts and a section that pays homage to particular filmmakers.
The features programme is divided into seven main sections, with themes varying every year.
