Stanford Antigua Sailing Week rolls thrilling races, barbecues and rum punches into one unforgettable package. The gathering of over 200 participating yachts of varying sizes in Falmouth Harbour and English Harbour is truly a majestic sight.
The week starts with the Around the Island Race. The best panoramic views are from the Shirley Heights Lookout, which also organises an early (7am) Start of Sailing Week Breakfast. Visitors can take in the spectacular views of the 200 or so yachts, which range from cruising boats to state-of-the-art hi-tech racing machines.
The first day of races concludes with the popular Beach Bash in Fort James, to which thousands of revellers flock for the picture-perfect sunsets, rum punch, barbecues and tinkly steel-drum music. The sunburnt, salt-encrusted sailors also attend but leave early to be in good shape for the next day of sailing.
The week concludes with the Beating of the Retreat in the romantic Nelson's Dockyard. The Governor General, yacht owners, crews and race officials all attend to see the Antiguan flag lowered and the prizes awarded in a special ceremony.
