Prefacing Salzburg's main summer festival, the short Salzburg Whitsun Festival concentrates on baroque music. Since 2007 Italian maestro Riccardo Muti has brought a touch of his native Naples, together with the young musicians of the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra.
Muti has brought to Salzburg's Haus für Mozart operas and oratorios by the likes of Cimarosa, Paisiello and Jommelli.
In 2010 he conducts two versions of Metastasio's version of Betulia liberata, about Judith saving Bethulia by beheading the city's enemy, general, Holofernes. The first (21 & 23 May) is by Mozart, the other by Jomelli (24 May).
Also included are Johann Adolph Hasse's opera Piramo e Tisbe (22 May) given by Fabio Biondi and his Europa Galante, and Paul Agnew conducting various Lamentations (23 May) with Les Arts Florissants.
