Situated right on the waterfront of fashionable Darling Harbour, the Imax Theatre Sydney has one of the biggest screens in the world and shows both 2D and 3D films.
Imax screens (like the 1,015 square metre one in the Imax Theatre Sydney) present a simulated experience like no other. The film used is ten times better resolution than a normal one, producing a giant super-real image that convinces you that you are really there. Using sophisticated infra-red technology and personal headsets for surround sound, some films are even in 3D. From underwater simulation to views of flying over New York, it has transformed the cinematic experience.
The Imax Theatre Sydney opened in 1996, designed by Australian architect Lionel Glendinning, with a striking aluminium cladding and black and yellow checkerboard facade. The theatre shows a variety of films each day, in an ever-changing programme throughout the year.
