One of the largest snow festivals in the world, the Québec Winter Carnival makes the most of the region's harsh climatic conditions. Close to a million visitors enjoy activities and shows in the cold, including costumed balls and parades.
Snow sculpture competitions fill the city with madcap scenery, a "snow bath" is created for the truly intrepid and the frozen Saint-Laurent river acts as the venue for dogsled races. Intended primarily as a way to brighten up the bleak days of midwinter, the event has been a highlight on the Quebec City calendar for years. The character of "Bonhomme" acts as the figurehead of the carnival and Quebec goes snow crazy.
