In 2008, Maison Martin Margiela celebrates its 20th anniversary, reason enough for the Antwerp Fashion Museum to devote a powerful retrospective to this enfant terrible of couture.
Martin Margiela graduated from the Antwerp Academy of Fashion in 1988 along with the rest of the maverick fash pack known as the Antwerp Six, and quickly established his own label after a stint at Jean-Paul Gaultier. Margiela caused a welcome uproar in the fashion world with his long, narrow silhouettes, his deconstructivist approach and use of second-hand fabric, so dramatically different from the shiny power dressing shapes that characterised the 80s.
