European Capital of Culture 2009, Linz explodes into its new role with the Opening 09 celebrations. On the stroke of midnight, fireworks set to music splash colour over the River Danube and signal the start of a three-day party.
The best place to see the fireworks is anywhere along the Danube and its embankments between the new Ars Electronica Centre, the Nibelungen bridge, the Lentos Kunstmuseum and the Brucknerhaus. The celebrations begin two hours before midnight and continue into the early hours with bars, clubs and restaurants offering longer opening hours.
Once the hangovers have subsided, folk presentations, inaugurations, exhibition openings and previews of the Linz09 programme take over the city centre. On 1 January a New Year's Day concert takes place at 11am at the Palais Kaufmännischer Verein. Then at 2pm the new Ars Electronica Centre is officially inaugurated. Stick around until 4pm for the official Linz09 opening concert and until 7pm for the opening of the Best of Austria exhibition at the Lentos Kunstmuseum.
On 2 January the action moves out into the other districts and suburbs of Linz, making sure that the whole of the local population is involved in getting the city's biggest year yet off to the best start.
