It was the renowned explorer Jacques Cartier, sailing from the French port of Saint-Malo, who first ventured up the Saint-Lawrence River in 1534. He is known as the official discoverer of Quebec, with plenty of avenues, government buildings, hamlets and schools bearing his name throughout the region.
The Quebecois are fiercely attached to their French roots and this is the event during which they celebrate their Gallic heritage. Plenty of people show up in period costume and the festivities are a good window into the Quebecois bon vivant nature.
The whole historic town of Quebec takes part in the event - please visit the website for a list of venues and a detailed programme.
