Yves Saint Laurent was undoubtedly one of the greatest designers of the 20th century. San Francisco's de Young Museum celebrates his unique vision with over 100 accessorised garments and sketches illustrating the lines, colours, and fundamentals of his work.
Yves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint Laurent was born in 1936 in Algeria. His love for design flourished as a result of a fashionable mother and he became chief designer of the House of Dior at the young age of 21.
He set up his renowned label in 1962 with his business and personal partner, Pierre Berge. Drawing inspirations drawn from art, theatre, history, literature and nature, he is renowned for introducing trouser suits, safari jackets and sweaters to women's wear. He died on 1 June, 2008.
