The World Museum Liverpool presents The Beat Goes On, an exhibition looking at the city's musical identity, its success and its continuing evolution.
The exhibition explores Liverpool's rich musical heritage from its early musical influences from across the Atlantic during the 1940s and 1950s, to the Merseybeat phenomenon, the Liverpool Eighties new wave scene and the continuing popularity of contemporary Merseyside musicians.
Highlights include fascinating memorabilia from the Sixties, including John Lennon's jacket from the band's 1964 tour, the All You Need is Love bedspread from John and Yoko's "bed-in" for peace in Montreal in 1969 and Billy Fury's guitar.
Part of the exhibition focuses on Liverpool's influential late-Seventies club Eric's which helped to launch bands like Echo and the Bunnymen, OMD, Dead or Alive, Wah Heat! and The Teardrop Explodes. The city's buoyant dance scene is also explored from its origins at the legendary nightclub Quadrant Park in the early 1990s, through to the superclub Cream.
Audio and interactive displays bring exhibits to life and visitors are brought up to date with material on popular contemporary groups like The Coral, The Zutons and The Wombats.
