Madrid's star exhibition for autumn/winter 2008 is Rembrandt: History Painter (Historias de Rembrandt). The collection at The Prado Museum features 35 paintings and prints by the Dutch master, borrowed from galleries across Europe and America. Expect queues out the door.
The Prado Museum is famed for housing masterpieces of great European painters, such as Goya, El Greco and Rubens. Rembrandt, however, is not as well represented, with only one of his works (Artemisia, 1634) in the gallery's permanent collection.
The Renaissance artist is known for his portraits and landscapes, but this exhibition displays his narrative creations, as well as pieces by Titian and Rubens (Rembrandt's inspiration).
The collection encompasses all stages of the artist's career, from his earlier work, such as Two Old Men Disputing (St Peter and St Paul) (1628), to pieces he created in the years leading up to his death, including Bathsheba at Her Bath.
