One of the unmissable celebrations during Holy Week in Quito is on Good Friday. There is a spectacular procession through the old city that charts the events of Christ's Passion, complete with effigies of Christ and the Virgin Mary.
Devotees (members of religious guilds), dressed in purple tunics with matching cone-shaped hoods, lead the procession. The pageant also depicts Romans whipping penitents, who bear large crosses on their shoulders which they must carry along the entire route.
