The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art displays the work of Spanish artist Juan Muñoz. The pieces mainly consist of sculptures of the human figure, at times comical yet often disturbingly poignant at the same time.
Muñoz was the subject of international acclaim in the mid-1980s. This exhibition in Porto shows a range of his works up until his untimely death in 2001.
Muñoz' sculptures are well known for creating tension between the illusory and the real, and the artist's interest in depicting isolation of the individual among a crowd.
The exhibition, which visited the Tate Modern and the Bilbao Guggenheim earlier in the year, includes well-known sculptures such as Many Times (1999), The Prompter (1988) and Conversation Piece (1996), the "raincoat drawings", and important pieces with sound, light and mechanical elements. Scale and perspective are central to the installations, which are both wonderfully theatrical and uncanny.
