North Sea Jazz Festival, widely regarded as one of Europe's premier jazz events, returns to Rotterdam's Ahoy with a stellar line-up of international performers. The programme covers a range of genres, from trad jazz to hard bop, blues and hip-hop.
Performances take place on multiple stages simultaneously, with around 180 acts in all appearing. The event also features exhibitions, workshops and concerts for children.
The 2009 line-up features keyboard legend Herbie Hancock appearing with Chinese pianist Lang Lang, veteran blues guitar giant BB King, classic singer-songwriter James Taylor and contemporary jazz singer Jamie Cullum. Songwriter Burt Bacharach makes several festival appearances as does free jazz saxophonist John Zorn.
Dutch drummer extraordinaire Han Bennink leads his trio with trumpeter Dave Douglas, double bass player Charlie Haden leads a quartet featuring Lee Konitz, Brad Mehldau and Jorge Rossy and piano player McCoy Tyner leads an ensemble featuring saxophonist Gary Bartz and guitarists Bill Frisell and John Scofield.
