First staged in Nelson in 1987, the Montana New Zealand Wearable Art Awards has become an international event, featuring a multicultural art and performance extravaganza at the Wellington Convention Centre's TSB Bank Arena.
The event takes place from late September to early October, with the show given nine times over the 11-day period.
The awards consist of far more than just a flounce down the catwalk. Artists labour for months to create their outfits and each design is given its own special light effects, atmospheric music and full choreography. The competition is stiff and the creative input is quite spectacular.
There are various categories, with prizes ranging from NZ$1000-NZ$5,000. The overall winner receives a NZ$10,000 cash prize and a NZ$2000 Hoglund Art glass trophy, as well as NZ$10,000 worth of international travel (courtesy of American Express).
Different categories have included Bizarre Bras, Illumination Illusions and Reflective Surfaces. The two final sections could produce the wildest ideas; the Open section has no theme and is only limited by the designers' imagination, while the Avant Garde section invites you to think outrageously...
An absolute must-see, be you art-lover, fashion designer or just a humble aesthete.
