For most of the year, Queenstown is a sophisticated place, but in late June and July, wacky events emerge for the Queenstown Winter Festival. Fun-loving Kiwis take part in Frisbee golf tournaments, lake-swimming in freezing temperatures and crazy partying.
Dating back to 1975, the festival also has a Dog Derby, where farmers and their dogs slide down snow on their bottoms.
Alongside the parades, fireworks, workshops and partying there is also some culture, with plays and concerts included in the programme. The spectacular hot-air ballooning (weather permitting) and the final of the Top Blokes competition form a great double climax.
This can only scratch the surface of ten days of irrepressible winter fun. The festival website has more information and it seems pretty clear that Queenstown is the place to be in mid-winter!
