Navam Perahera is Colombo's grandest outdoor parade and commemorates the country's gaining of independence on the 4 February 1948. Pomp and pageantry are the order of National Day, with some fine displays of Sri Lanka's traditional forms of art.
Dancers and drummers from around the island take part in a magnificent procession of more than 100 beautifully decorated elephants for National Day. To experience the colourful pageant in full force, be sure to visit Independence Square and thearea outside Parliament.
