This strangely-named bullfighting festival, Jesus of the Great Power, attracts matadores (bullfighters) and bull-rearers from all over the country and beyond to compete in Quito's Plaza de Toros bullring.
There is a complex secret art to the craft of the matador: many hours of sweat and training and a lot of technical finesse lie behind the seamless ritual performance you see in the ring. Whatever your feelings about the sport, it takes a lot of skill and a great deal of practice. If you find the whole practice upsetting or unpleasant, please avoid this event.
The skill of the matador resides mostly in his agile choreography and in the elegant style of his attacks against the bull. The final lethal estocada, which is the culmination of this dance of death, can be delivered in any of a number of ways: the derechazo, pinchazo and en su sitio (the perfect stroke should kill the bull instantly).
