The quaint village of San Antonio de Escazú provides more than a glimpse of rural Costa Rican life at the annual celebrations for the National Day of the Ox Cart Driver.
Festivities begin at the early hour of 5am with Alegre Diana (Happy Diana) running around the village streets summoning everyone out of bed. At mid-morning there is a marvellous procession of old and traditionally painted ox carts pulled by the faithful beasts from the town hall to the Iglesia de San Antonio church. Clowns frolick alongside and children in typical dress stand in the back of the carts.
On reaching the church, the ox cart drivers are then blessed and awarded prizes for the most attractive cart and diligent ox. The celebrations would not be complete without music and food stands serving up the classic Costa Rican chicken and rice and wholesome gallo pinto, rice and beans.
