At the end of September the city of Vilnius celebrates the Autumn Equinox. This is a time, according to ancient mythology, when miracles can happen, and in the past people would make sacrifices in honour of the dead.
Nowadays the event is celebrated in memory of Duke Gediminas, and the city comes alive with an exciting programme of events. Revellers take to the streets for Vilnius Carnival, while the more subdued enjoy the specially-staged classical concerts and theatre performances.

The highlight of the celebration is the International Festival of Fire Sculptures. People gather by the river Neris to see the 12-metre straw sculptures of mythological creatures set on fire. As they burn, fireworks burst from their bodies, adding to the drama of the spectacle.
Event details can change.
Please check with the organisers that the event is happening before making travel arrangements.
