The largely untouristy Feast of Good Health is a must for anyone wishing to witness a truly original Venetian celebration. Thousands of locals make a boat pilgrimage to the Chiesa della Salute church, praying to the Madonna for good health.
The origins of this celebration date back to 1630, the year in which Venice was hit by severe pestilence. In an attempt to save the population from the spreading disease, the Doge asked for the intercession of the Virgin Mary and ordered the construction of the church, which he dedicated to her.
