On the night of 1 November, Mexicans descend on El Zócalo in morbid fancy dress to prepare their colourful offerings for their deceased loved ones. The following day, All Souls Day, there are competitions, exhibitions, live music and dance.
Previous years have seen performances by the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra and the Amalia Hernández Folklore Ballet.
