Constructed on the site of a 13th-century fortress, the Prince's Palace in Monte Carlo has been transformed over the centuries into a luxurious Louis XIV-style residence. The State Apartments are open for public visits between June and October.
Highlights include: the double revolution Carrera marble staircase between the Hercule Gallery and the main courtyard; 16th-century frescoes attributed to Francesco Mazzuchelli; the Palatine Chapel dedicated to St John the Baptist; the dramatic Mirror Gallery; the Louis XV-style Red Room with paintings by Flemish masters; the Blue Room filled with walls of silk brocade and Grimaldi portraits and the Throne Room, with palatial Italian frescoes.
