The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a revamped version of one of the oldest libraries in the world and a major cultural centre in Alexandria. It is home to more than eight million books, museums, art galleries and a planetarium.
In 1974 the University of Alexandria introduced the idea of recreating the great Alexandria Library on the site where the ancient one once stood. In 1988 UNESCO organised an architectural competition to find a suitable plan for the new building. Norwegian company Snøhetta beat several world-famous architects, and in 1995 began the construction work.
