Above the waterline, an over-water yoga pavilion provides the perfect backdrop to your salute to the sun. A state-of-the-art gymnasium sits nearby in a water pagoda, but if the treadmill looks too energetic for your relaxed state, a "house reef", perfect for snorkelling, surrounds the island. The abundance of fish in the shallows means you don't need to take advantage of the in-resort scuba school in order to witness first-hand the colourful marine life of the Indian Ocean.

If you'd rather be on the water than under it the resort, with a constant eye towards eco-tourism, offers non-motorised water sports from canoeing to windsurfing. The communal areas include a stunning infinity pool and inviting deck bars, sometimes a little neglected due to the high standard of the accommodation.

Every bungalow, whether nestled on the white sand beside the ocean or on stilts above the clear azure water, is designed to give total luxury and privacy. Being a Muslim country, nude or even topless sunbathing in public is illegal. But as each property, uniquely to the Maldives, has its own private pool, it's a shy skinny dipper's delight.
